My wife and I purchased two Fifth Wheel Thunder 2 bikes during the Valentine's sale, taking into account several constraints we had. We needed bikes that would fit inside our van, which limited our choices. I was unfamiliar with this brand and had reservations about the potential quality and service issues often associated with Chinese brands. However, all my concerns have been completely allayed as everything has been outstanding.
2x Thunder 2 six-speed e-bikes fit nicely across inside our Sienna with only the handlebars folded down. scrap wood mount holds the front tire, and bikes are strapped to the back of the seat rest and passenger hold-handle. In/out in under a minute. a tad low/thin compared to my mountain bikes, but in the rides so far, it's been comfortable enough for our mostly road and rails-to-trails type riding. bit tight. The bike itself, with 20-inch wheels, is compact—a factor we were prepared for and something I'm still getting used to but not nearly as bad as I worried it might be. The bikes have performed excellently on short rides of 5 to 10 miles. The 350-watt motor, with a 500-watt peak, is sufficiently powerful for us. We enjoy actual biking and wanted the ability to pedal, which is why we appreciate the multiple gears. There are plenty of online video reviews so I'll not go more into the physical/ride aspects.
One point some might consider a limitation is the absence of a zero-start throttle, but this was not an issue for us. My wife prefers not to use a throttle, and some of the national parks we plan to visit, like Zion, only permit class-1 ebikes. When purchasing, I was prepared to remove the throttle if necessary to comply with these restrictions.
After testing the bikes and being satisfied with their performance, as well as constructing a custom mount for our van, I reached out to Fifth Wheel's support to inquire about removing the throttle without voiding the warranty. Initially, they responded without instructions but confirmed that removal wouldn't affect the warranty and promised to follow up. True to their word, they sent a video and written instructions within three days. The throttle was easily removable due to its plug-in design, located within the wiring bundle, with most of the removal time being removing the grip/brake secured by various hex screws. I plan to replace it with an easy-on/easy-off throttle so we can use it if we want but still take off when we want formal class-1, as is required in some national and local parks.
The customer support from Fifth Wheel has been exemplary. They've promptly and efficiently answered all my inquiries, even when they weren't related to warranty or product quality issues. Their proactive and helpful service gives me confidence in their support for any future issues. The bike's build quality is good for the price and the overall value is commendable, but it was the customer support that truly exceeded my expectations.
This is just my personal review, I've not received any incentives or special discounts from them. (the 2 for 999 sale is still going on when I posted this).
